"Holes" Movie Poster

Holes is a comedy-drama film made in 2003 that is based on the novel written in 1998. The poster is inspired by the flashbacks and references a wanted poster from the 1800s. Additionally, the handlettered type is inspired by wood type from the 1800s. The poster was created by a combination of a laser engraver and printing press.

Overview

Western Wanted Poster

The yellow-spotted lizard, known for its deadly bite, is the central and menacing element in this movie poster. Its strategic placement, crawling down the composition, guides the viewer’s eyes smoothly towards the movie title and credits. The title, set in a wood typeface with thick slab serifs, evokes the Western theme of the movie, adding a layer of historical context and visual interest.

Creating a balanced design that effectively utilizes negative and positive space was the most challenging aspect of this project. The goal was to achieve a clean, engaging composition that captured the viewer’s attention and conveyed the film’s themes.

The poster’s creation involved a combination of a laser engraver and a printing press. To achieve the weathered look of old paper, the Stonehenge paper was stained with coffee and tea, providing an authentic aged appearance. The use of plywood introduced a variety of marks and textures, adding to the poster’s rustic and genuine feel, reminiscent of a vintage wanted poster.
