Jackson Font

The Jackson font is dedicated to the singer, Michael Jackson. Specifically, based on his time in the band Jackson 5. With the combination of Broad-pen Roman and Strada, the sans-serif reverse contrast type was created. There are three different weights, all lowercase, to show Michael’s range, versatility, and vocal strength as a child and teen.

Overview

Type Revival

This project involved the challenge of creating an original type revival set of letters and numbers inspired by historical letterforms I discovered. The aim was to rejuvenate these classic designs with careful attention to proportion and consistency. I combined the elegant calligraphy of Broad-pen Roman with the geometric influence of Strada to create a unique sans-serif reverse contrast typeface. This blend resulted in a traditional and suitable typeface for modern design needs.

My design process began with in-depth research into the visual and contextual history of both typefaces. I analyzed stroke contrasts, weight distributions, and stylistic features. Initial hand-drawn sketches captured the reverse contrast style, where horizontal strokes are thicker than vertical ones. I refined the glyphs through multiple iterations, adjusting proportions, kerning, and spacing.

I curated a color scheme highlighting the Motown era’s cultural and historical significance to complement the type design. Bold, vibrant colors were chosen to reflect this period’s dynamic and fun spirit, enhancing the visual appeal of the book design.
